Thanks, parteeboy, for your clarification earlier. i totally agree with you in hoping that, in the future, the phrase "trust the local authorities" will not be a joke anymore.
reading all the recent posts, however, i'm very dismayed to see the reactions to an "unofficial" report of Valley golf. How quickly the tide of opinions can change.
I know we all seem to be watching a Rashomon-like play where both versions of the story are so far apart that we're convinced both sides must be fibbing.
But what about the fact that a 14 year-old minor was beaten up black and blue by adults who happen to be political big shots? Isn't this a reprehensible act in itself? An act that is sufficient to arouse all our collective indignation?
I have a 15 year old son. Like all kids who started playing golf early, he developed a very fluid, enviable swing. He had great course management also. We once played Tagaytay Royale when he was about 8. He played all the holes like they were par 4, laying up short of trouble all the time. I was the proudest dad that day.
with that memory in mind, there is no way that I will not side with Mr. de la Paz in this story. The mere fact that he was able to raise two genuine future golf champions, and that he does not disguise (i.e. sandbag) their handicaps, makes him a hero in my book.
Mr. de la Paz needs our encouragement so that he will not decide to stop in his efforts to raise Bino and Bambee as international golf stars.
I don't want to lay the blame on Valley golf for this fiasco. The club's legal counsel is a good friend of mine. But I'm pretty sure the club's first priority in this incident is to cover its own behind. The mere fact that it has not yet expelled the Pangandamans from its roster more than a week after the incident already indicates that a cover-up is being cooked up.
To all posters who think Mr. de la Paz is the one to blame for his son being beaten up, think for a moment what you will say to your child when he or she comes up to you one day and say, "Dad, can you teach me to play golf?"
To reply on the last part of your post...
Yes, if my kids come up and asks me to teach them to play golf, I would not... I'll have someone qualified to teach them. What I will teach them though is the discipline and control of not getting themselves into trouble. I will also make sure not to put them in the situation like dela Paz did. He opened not only himself but his family to this fiasco (with the help of the Pamandangans of course). Everyone can say that its against the law or it's child abuse etc... I they would not have gotten beat up if dela Paz had common sense and self control.
